The Best Pets For Small Children

If you have a child three years old or younger you may be wondering what pet is best suited for a child in this age bracket. After all curious little toddlers love to pull hair and chase animals for fun. You might be thinking a pet would live a very torturous life with your little munchkin. However, there are actually many wonderful pets that do quite well with pint sized tots.

Dogs

Most dogs are very good with babies and young children. The key is finding the right breed or dog with certain personality traits. If you plan on buying a pure bread dog some of the best breeds for children are golden retrievers, labs, and Australian Shepherds. You will also want to be sure to meet the puppy and the parents if possible before making the final commitment. See how the dog reacts around your child and give them some time to get acquainted.

If you decide to adopt a dog or puppy at your local animal shelter you will also want to be sure to look for certain personality traits. Look for a loving affectionate dog that shows signs of loyalty right away. For instance, does the dog rub up against you and come to you right away. Is he or she friendly and laid back at the same time. A dog that is not overly hyper and friendly is the perfect mix when you have small children in the house.

Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs are adored by small children. These little creatures are cute, cuddly and even fun to look at. Even small children can be taught to hold a Guinea pig. These little rodents are also easy to care for.

Fish

Small children love to look at colorful fish. Be sure to choose a tank that holds plenty of fish. Your little toddler will get excited watching the fish swim around in the tank, and your little tike can even learn how to feed the fish. However, the adults should always clean the tank.

Small Birds

Small birds, like parakeets are wonderful pets for children under six years old. These birds come in a wide variety of colors. If your child's favorite color is green he or she might absolutely love a little green bird as a pet. Birds do tend to get lonely in their cage so it is a good idea to have more than one bird.
