Do You Really Need Pet Insurance?

Not too long ago, you would have been thought crazy to consider obtaining pet health insurance. However, now that our family critters are living longer and leading healthier lives, with the increased cost of veterinary care, as well as more advanced treatments available to our four-legged family members, many owners are looking at it as not just an option but a necessity.

We don't want to think about our family getting sick, and it doesn't matter if that family member has two or four legs. We need to think about their insurance needs as much as we do the insurance needs of our human family. Even the most well-trained animal can still be high spirited, active, and often gets into trouble just by being curious -- that's part of the reason we love them so much! And just like our two-legged children, it isn't possible to be with them every minute or to protect them from every danger. Then, of course, there is the threat of disease.

That is exactly where health insurance come into the picture. By having coverage on your furry family members, it gives you peace of mind so you do not worry about not being able to afford veterinary treatment. You are going to be worried enough if your friend gets sick. You don't need the additional worry of going into debt.

Most of us will do what it takes to ensure our animal companions lead the happiest and healthiest lives they can, and that includes the best available veterinary care. Veterinary medicine has made advances in recent years. The result is that our local vets are able to offer treatment they would not have had access to just a few short years ago. However, just as with human health care, that treatment comes with a hefty price tag attached.

Our pets now have treatment available which at one time was used solely for human health care. Treatments available now include chemotherapy, diagnostic blood work, MRIs and even kidney transplants. A short time ago conditions that would have resulted in the death of our beloved companions are now being treated and helping them go on to lead longer lives with excellent quality of life. However, those treatments often range anywhere from $1,000 to much more.

We hope we won't ever have to use insurance, for ourselves or our animals. For some people, that means they feel they don't need to have coverage for their critters. Even people who love their companion animals and treat them very well in all other areas, take a more pragmatic approach to their health and veterinary care. They believe when the cost of treating them gets too high, they will choose to have them put to sleep.

Those folks believe they will be able to make that difficult decision, but when the time comes they find it is not so easy. Just imagine:

You, your beloved family pet who is quite ill, and probably your children are all gathered in the vet's examining room. You are upset, your children are crying, your animal is probably anxious. and the vet you have trusted for years tells you there is a treatment that would be successful. Your children look to you with renewed hope that they will not lose their beloved companion after all. What would you do?

Most of us would probably do whatever it takes and spend whatever we need. We don't do this just because we love our pet and want to take excellent care of them. We also do it because this is a valued member of our family, and we want them to enjoy the best quality of life they can for as long as they can and to do so with us. Pet insurance coverage assures us we can do just that.
